Less Weight Equals Big Cost Savings.

Pound-for-pound, steel hollow structural sections (HSS) have greater strength- to-weight ratios than wide flange W and HP shapes. HSS also has excellent compression characteristics and exceptional torsional resistance.

That means with HSS you need less steel to do the same job. And less weight equals less cost.

Consider this example: A 32-foot long, 8" x 8" x 3/16" HSS column can support a greater load than a W12 x 40 wide-flange structural. The HSS column weighs just 19.6 lbs.-per-foot. The wide-flange column more than twice as much---40 lbs.-per-foot. That's a weight savings per column of 51 percent!

The longer the columns, the greater the weight and cost savings for HSS.

The straight sides of HSS mean fabricators can make straight cuts and fillet welds, at 45-degree or 90-degree angles. You don't have to cope out flanges.

With HSS you have only four sides, rather than six with wide-flange structurals, so you have less area and edges to paint or fireproof.

You can save on shipping and erection costs with HSS too. The heavier loads of other steel structurals can add to shipping costs and require larger equipment and overweight permits. And because HSS weighs less, you can use lighter-capacity, lower-cost cranes and equipment during erection.

So, with HSS, you save not only on the tons of steel you buy, but on the fabrication, painting, shipping and erection costs, as well.

HSS Saves Weight in Columns and Trusses

The superior strength of HSS enables you to reduce the size---and weight---of the steel used in box and other trusses too. And the same cost savings as columns apply to fabrication, painting/fireproofing, shipping and erection costs for trusses, as well.

The conclusion is obvious. Whether you're an architect, structural engineer, fabricator or contractor, you can look smart, cut your projects' weight and get big cost savings by specifying HSS.
